Message from the President
Happy New Year fellow MASWA members!

I hope all of you have had holidays filled with merriment and treasured memories with family and friends.
I know that I did! This is such a great time for all of us to count our blessings...please know that each of you ranks very highly on the list of blessings in my life!

I am THRILLED to let you know that Linda Debner was nominated, accepted and was unanimously voted by your Board to fill our vacant position of President Elect (which means that she will take over the Presidency for next year at our Spring Luncheon). Linda works for Hospice of the Twin Cities and has been an active member of MASWA for many years. Linda has served in many capacities including co-chair of the Fall Aging Conference, Secretary of the FAC, MASWA Board as Job Bank /Mentor and Secretary to name a few. Linda brings with her a great history with MASWA as well as a delightful style and sense of humor. Please join me in thanking Linda for stepping up and taking on this position.

Over the years our Public Policy Committees have done a nice job of communicating information through our newsletter and planning the Annual Joint Public Policy with St. Paul Senior Workers. Many of you have heard me mention the fact that our two organizations could make a much greater impact if we unified our voices all year ‘round rather than just at the joint meeting. Please read the column on Public Policy News for a great update! As always, it continues to be my honor to serve MASWA and work toward a stronger voice for senior workers and the clients we serve.

Paul R. Blom, President

Reminiscing - 2006

What do you remember about 2006? For MASWA , it was a year of great events and a year of change. When I think back on the year, the most memorable event for me was the Fall Aging Conference. The Annual Spring Luncheon had a wonderful speaker, good food, and beautiful décor. But, the Fall Conference was so impressive from the beautiful brochure to the quality of the presenters that I’d rate it most memorable! The brochure was designed by a professional graphic designer who donated his time but prefers to remain anonymous. Thank you for your beautiful work! This was the largest attendance of any previous conferences, with 252 registered participants and 391 people served at lunch. Evaluations reported rave reviews for the nationally renowned speakers and the large group format for all sessions.
The Conference was not the end of a great day, but the enjoyment continued with The Shelley Joseph-Kordell Award Ceremony. This is a wonderful event with the 2006 award given to Twin Cities Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. The scholarship was given to Kristine Talley, who is now pursuing her PhD in gerontological nursing. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Hubert “Skip” Humphrey III, President of the MN Chapter of AARP and the Keynote speaker was, Maria R. Gomez’, former Commissioner of MN Department of Human Services. For those of you who missed this part of the conference, don’t forget to attend next year’s event—a great closing to a great day!
