Presenter:
Kay King, Director of the Older Adults Program at the National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota (NAMI Minnesota)
She is a family educator who teaches NAMIs Family to Family 12 week education course and also is the State Trainer for Family to Family class teachers.
King is the former Executive Director of a retirement community in the Twin Cities that offers both independent and assisted living services and is a long-time volunteer with seniors.
She is a family member whose grandmother, mother, sister and niece lived/lives with a mental illness.
Presentation Learning Objectives:
- To provide an overview of the prevalence and impact of mental illness and how it effects the lives of older adults and their families. We will also discuss stigma and the place of mental illness among other major illnesses.
- To provide an overview of the possible risk factors and warning signs of depression and suicidal behavior in older adults.
- To review resources available for senior workers, older adults and their families as they support older adults living with mental illness.
