Topic: “The Best of It ~ from Age to Sage”

Presenter:
Pastor David Holm, Director of Spiritual Services for The Waters Senior Living

Pastor David Holm is Director of Spiritual Services for The Waters Senior Living. He is a pastor with nearly 40 years of experience as senior pastor in several leading congregations in Wisconsin, South Dakota and Minnesota. His most recent pastorate at Normandale Lutheran Church of Edina, Minnesota included the development of the Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness, a ministry exclusively devoted to vibrant senior living.

Pastor Holm recently founded and developed a design team and creative ministry with seniors at The Colony at Eden Prairie. This experience provided an impetus to integrate residents and parishioners in experiences of community life.

Pastor Holm is a trustee of Fairview Southdale Hospital, a director of Lutheran Health Care Bangladesh, and a friend of the Benedictine Monastic Community, St. John's, Collegeville, Minnesota.

Educator, trainer and consultant, specializing in change and transitionAging includes losses. Not only the common changes in health, but related losses of relationships, power, unfulfilled dreams, even the timing and manner of death and dying. It is crucial that professional caregivers and volunteers be alert to such losses and be ready to assist individuals and families with grieving. Dianne Bartels is the Center for Bioethics Associate Director and Assistant Professor of Medicine and Bioethics. She is an Adjunct Faculty Member in the School of Nursing and the department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at the University of Minnesota.

Mary Bornong, LISW, Care Manager with Senior Social Services at Volunteers of America MN has over 20 years social service experience serving diverse populations, people with developmental disabilities, older adults and at risk youth. Prior to working at Volunteers of America MN, Mary was the Care Consultant/Outreach Manager at the Alzheimer's Association.

EARLY Detection and Diagnosis of Dementia:
A Neuropsychological Perspective

Terry R. Barclay, Ph.D. completed his doctoral training in clinical psychology at Michigan State University with specialization in aging and neuropsychology. Dr. Barclay is currently in independent practice in Edina where he performs neuropsychological evaluations, psychotherapy, and family interventions for individuals with dementia and their care partners. He is also a clinical neuropsychologist with HealthEast Care System and St. Joseph's Hospital and consultant for the geriatric research division of Los Angeles-based Vital Research, LLC.

Program Overview and Objectives:

  • Describe the signs and symptoms of early dementia and the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral changes that take place with disease progression.
  • Discuss strategies for early detection and diagnosis.
  • Explain the role of a neuropsychologist and what cognitive testing can offer.
  • Illustrate the use of new cognitive screening measures.

Alisha Anderson Bierma is an attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis’s Housing Discrimination Law Project. During her first year of law school, Ms. Bierma completed a Borchard Fellowship on Law and Aging focused on disability-based housing discriminations against senior citizens. Ms. Bierma is a magna cum laude graduate of Carleton College and the University of Michigan Law School.

Topic: Thinking the Unthinkable

Presenter: Richard Heinrich, M.D.
Dr. Heinrich is the Medical Director of HealthPartners Hospice and Palliative Care. For 8 years he was the Psychiatric Medical Director of a 10 bed geriatric inpatient
unit at the Regina Medical enter in Hastings, MN. He currently provides geriatric psychiatry consultation to residents in long term care settings in over 80 nursing homes in the 7 metro county area. He specializes in end of life care and last year completed a masters' degree in bioethics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Who, What, When, Where, Why and How?
Presenter: Jonathan W. Lips, Attorney at Law

Jon Lips is an attorney practicing in the areas of elder law and estate planning. Prior to forming his firm, Jon served as Vice President of Advocacy and Legal Counsel for Care Providers of Minnesota, a long-term care association where he worked from 2003 through 2008. His experience also includes internships with the Aging and Adult Services division of the Minnesota Department of Human Services, and the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. Jon is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Elder Law Section, and is an active volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Park Nicollet Foundation’s St. Louis Park Senior Initiative. Raised in Duluth, Jon attended Georgetown University and the University of Virginia School of Law, and now lives in St. Louis Park with his wife and daughter.

Program objectives:

  • Understand the difference between a guardianship and a conservatorship

  • Identify alternatives to guardianship and conservatorship

  • List factors relevant to determining if a person is capable of making his or her own decisions
